Hi fluters! Today I'm back with a blog post all about the exercise books I use to work on tonguing and articulation. These books include exercises I often return to whenever my tonguing feels a little slow or inaccurate—they really help me recalibrate my coordination.

Of course, there are many other great resources out there, so if you have a flute teacher, I recommend asking them which exercises they like to use in their own practice or with their students.

You also don’t need to own all of these books to get started. In my experience, working on just 1–2 exercises at a time is more than enough to make progress with your tonguing technique.

📘 Robert Winn – Articulation for Flute

This book contains a collection of études and musical excerpts that are fantastic for tonguing practice. Practising through a collection of études and musical passages can help make your articulation work feel more connected to real playing.

📘 Reichert – Seven Daily Exercises, Op. 5

These exercises are freely available on IMSLP and are excellent for intermediate players. They go through all the major and minor keys, helping you build finger technique, interval accuracy, and of course, articulation.

📘 Paul-Edmund Davies – The 28 Day Warm-Up Book

Section Three: ArticulationThis section offers a wide range of tonguing exercises that start off simple and gradually incorporate finger coordination. It’s a great resource if you like having a big variety of exercises.

🎵 Bonus: Études to Apply Your Tonguing in Context

If you’d like to test your tonguing within a musical piece, try these études from Boehm’s 24 Etudes, Op. 26. They’re especially good for intermediate players working on clarity and speed:

  • No. 6 – Presto

  • No. 7 – Allegretto

  • No. 10 – Presto

  • No. 21 – Presto

And there you have! A list of my recommending tonguing exercises and resources that I used as a student and still use now in my articulation practice. Happy fluting and I'll see you in the next blog post!
