🍵Matcha Reviews: SONDER | My favourite matcha dessert cafe to date 🌟
SONDER is a dessert cafe like no other, no cap. The worst part about SONDER is that it is located in Brisbane and I live in Melbourne. Since the opening of this cafe in 2016, I have been a (too) frequent customer who visited almost every couple of weeks while I was living in Brisbane. SONDER is a unique matcha cafe that offers a great selection of (dessert) drinks, parfaits, speciality Japanese-inspired desserts and their own in-house cakes. They've been creative and experimental with their menu and often present a number of new desserts with rare flavours and interesting textures. To this day I have not found another dessert cafe in Melbourne or Brisbane that comes close to matching my experience at SONDER, and believe me, oh I have tried. The staff are usually very friendly and we always get our order without waiting too long.

In all my visits to SONDER in the past six years, both my all-time favourite beverages, the hojicha float and the iced hojicha latte, has never failed me. The flavour of the hojicha is balanced perfectly with milk and sweetness. This makes the drink very pleasant to consume as it is not bitter or syrup-y at all. The drink is also priced quite reasonably as you get a very generous portion.

The matcha float/iced matcha latte is also another great option to go for, although personally I find them slightly more bitter than the hojicha drinks. Their hot matcha and hojicha lattes are also quite good, but I think the flavours are stronger in the cold drinks.
This strawberry shortcake is very fresh and light, so it's perfect if you don't want something that's too heavy to consume along with the milky beverages.

Despite the changing cake selection throughout the years, there's always at least one cake that hits the sweet spot perfectly for us. SONDER will generally offer a selection of about 6-8 different cakes for the day so there are plenty of flavours to choose from, although most of them will be sold out if you visit during their last couple of hours of trading.
I personally like to visit in the afternoon as that's when you get the biggest selection of cakes and the cafe isn't as busy so it's comfortable to hang out at.
The space is relatively small, so it can feel a little cramped if you visit during peak hour (after 6pm at night). The furnishing is stylish and polished but still cosy, so it is a very nice place to meet and catch up with friends over some tea-flavoured desserts.
Final verdict: MY FAVOURITE PLACE IN BRISBANE
Atmosphere and venue: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Value: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
*the drinks and desserts were all served in reusuable glasses and utensils pre-pandemic. Since then the cafe has switched to using mostly takeaway packaging and utensils for their drinks and desserts.
